(SINGAPORE) The economy is expected to register robust growth this quarter - 9.5 per cent, according to economists' forecasts - though it'll be more of a technical rebound than anything else.

AMERICAN technology company FormFactor said yesterday that its new $30 million facility in Singapore will become the sole source of the component at the heart of its manufacturing process. But the facility, officially opened yesterday, is a lot smaller than the one originally planned in 2007. Back then, the Nasdaq-listed company - which makes wafter probe cards - said it would open a $301 million facility in 2009 that would create 1,000 jobs.

JUST as it had backed the growth-at-all-cost strategy, the labour movement will now go along with the move to boost productivity to drive the economy. Noting that different strategies are needed at different stages of economic development, labour chief Lim Swee Say told Parliament yesterday that higher productivity is the only option to sustain growth and higher wages for workers. And this can only be done if Singapore continues to keep its door open to foreign workers - but capped at the present sustainable level of one-third of the total workforce, he said on the second day of the debate on the Budget Statement.

A SOFTWARE company dubbed 'China's Little Giant' has opened its first R&D centre outside China in Singapore. Kingdee International Software Group Company, which has been operating in Singapore since early last year, said yesterday that it chose the island because of the government's strong support for the IT industry.

SINGAPORE'S burgeoning clean technology industry is to boast a cutting- edge green business park that will help create 20,000 'green-collar' jobs by 2030. Plans for the 50ha park, to be built in three phases at a cost of $52 million, were unveiled yesterday. The park in Nanyang Avenue, near Tuas, will feature green technologies such as stormwater recycling, solar power generation and buildings with the highest standards of environmental performance set in a lush green landscape.
