Precision engineering in Singapore has grown from a role of support for manufacturing investments into one that is capital-intensive and high-tech, contributing about 10% to the nation’s manufacturing output.
In 2008, the precision engineering industry employed some 101,000 people and is represented by 2,700 companies.
Precision engineering forms the backbone of most manufacturing processes, enabling the design and creation of complex components from semiconductor chips to aircraft engines. Thanks to precision engineering, Singapore accounts for 70% of the global market for semiconductor wire bonder units, 60% of auto axial insertion machines and 10% of household refrigerator compressors. Singapore is also the leading nation in the production of oil and gas equipment.
From simply being contract manufacturers, Singapore’s precision engineering companies have also grown their capabilities to provide total solutions, including design, prototyping, production and supply chain management.
