Electronics

Electronics is a cornerstone of the Singapore economy, contributing some 26% to the nation’s manufacturing output and accounting for the employment of about 91,000 workers.

With a strong knowledge-intensive manufacturing base, Singapore is a centre of excellence for electronics sectors such as semiconductors, computer peripherals, data storage and consumer electronics. A prime example is Seiko Epson Corporation, one of the top three global producers of printers and scanners, which chose to open an Electromagnetic Compatibility testing facility in Singapore, its first outside Japan. Another Japanese technology firm, Nitto Denko, in collaboration with Data Storage Institute (DSI), Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) and Nanyang Technology University, established Singapore’s first R&D centre for organic electronics to develop cost-effective sensor devices for biomedical applications.

With its end-to-end manufacturing capabilities, Singapore is the preferred location from which some of the world’s top electronics companies manage their business in emerging markets. We are home to 14 wafer silicon fabrication plants, 20 semiconductor assembly and test operations, about 40 integrated circuit design centres and the world’s top three wafer foundries, among others. Leading electronics companies such as Flextronics, Hitachi, Hoya and Showa have set up centres in Singapore.
