Chemicals
The chemicals industry is a key pillar of Singapore’s manufacturing sector, contributing over SGD 30 billion to manufacturing output.
The oil industry alone accounts for 5% of our GDP. Singapore is among the world’s top three oil refining centres and trading hubs, as well as one of the top three bulk liquid ports in the world. Research and Development has quickly established a foothold in the oil and gas industry in Singapore. Efforts have mainly been focused on optimising value from refineries, developing high-value products and creating alternative fuels. We have attracted many leading global petrochemical and specialty chemicals giants, such as ExxonMobil, Shell, Invista, BASF and Sumitomo.
Major investments by international MNCs have been made in Singapore. ExxonMobil and Shell’s multi-billion-dollar steam crackers, for example, will double Singapore’s total ethylene output to four million tons a year by 2011. When completed in 2011, ExxonMobil’s new petrochemical complex will be the corporation’s largest integrated chemical and refining site in the world. Mitsui Chemicals, Inc is investing US$153 million to build a second TAFMER™ plant in Singapore.
Singapore’s Jurong Island is among the top 10 petrochemical hubs in the world, with its Chemicals Complex housing more than 94 leading petroleum, petrochemical, specialty chemical and supporting companies with facilities valued at over SGD 24 million. A comprehensive range of integrated utilities is provided, including energy and water resources, tankage and terminalling facilities, warehousing, maintenance and repair support. The Banyan LogisPark and Meranti LogisPark were created on Jurong Island to offer extensive logistics and supply chain support for companies on the island.
Leveraging Singapore’s track record in intellectual property rights protection, we are focusing on R&D for technology platforms and commercial applications. The Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES) has been set up to lead the way in this arena, laying the foundation for future growth of this industry.
